Minnesota’s divided Legislature: What it means for business

By Doug Loon
President and CEO
Minnesota Chamber of Commerce

It’s been an interesting week since the elections wrapped up here in Minnesota. As we head into the legislative session on January 14, we’re facing a unique situation: Minnesota is now among the most equally divided states in the country.

We have a split congressional delegation. In the State Senate, Democrats hold a one-vote majority, and for the first time since 1978, the Minnesota House is equally split at 67 to 67. This historic new makeup in Saint Paul marks a significant change from the single party control we’ve seen over the past two years.

This shift could be a positive development for the business community. A divided legislature means policymakers will need to work together to pass new policies and create a balanced state budget, which is due by July 1, 2025. Collaboration will also be essential to address other key priorities for Minnesota.

Next week, we’ll dive deeper into these changes at our Economic Summit, where we’ll feature political analyst Blois Olson and the Chamber’s own Laura Bordelon. They’ll discuss the election results, the new split legislature, and what this means for Minnesota’s business community and economy as a whole.

This event is an opportunity to get insights you won’t hear anywhere else, focused specifically on how the election impacts your business.

We’re also thrilled to welcome Dr. Rebecca Cunningham, the new president of the University of Minnesota, to the Economic Summit. As a key partner to Minnesota’s business community, the U plays a critical role in driving innovation, transferring technology to the private sector, and building the future workforce.

Dr. Cunningham will share how the University is supporting economic growth and innovation in Minnesota, and she’ll take questions from attendees about its role in shaping the state’s economy.

The Economic Summit is happening on November 20. For tickets and more information, visit mnchamber.com. While you’re there, check out other events under the "Connect" tab, where you’ll find more opportunities to stay informed and connected.

I look forward to seeing you at the Economic Summit and sharing more updates with you next week on the Minnesota Business Podcast
